How motorcycle loans differ from car loans

Motorcycle loans work the same way as car loans, but rates are often higher because bikes are seen as recreational vehicles and lose value quickly. Terms are usually shorter, commonly 24 to 60 months. Dealers, manufacturer finance arms, banks and credit unions all lend for bikes, and credit unions often have the lowest rates.

Motorcycle loan formula

Amount financed = price + gear and fees − down payment
Monthly payment = P × r ÷ (1 − (1 + r)−n), r = APR ÷ 1200

Worked example

A $14,000 bike plus $1,000 of gear and fees, with $1,500 down, leaves $13,500 to finance. At 7.9% APR for 48 months the payment is $328.94 a month, and the total interest is $2,289.17.

Monthly payment on $10,000 at 8% APR

TermMonthly paymentTotal interest
24 months$452.27$854.55
36 months$313.36$1,281.09
48 months$244.13$1,718.20
60 months$202.76$2,165.84

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical motorcycle loan term?

Most motorcycle loans run 24 to 60 months. Some lenders offer 72 months or longer on expensive touring bikes, but shorter terms save interest.

Are motorcycle loan rates higher than car loans?

Usually yes, because lenders treat motorcycles as recreational vehicles that depreciate quickly. Promotional manufacturer rates can be lower.

How much is a payment on a $15,000 motorcycle?

Financing $15,000 at 8% APR for 60 months is about $304 a month. Over 48 months it is about $366 a month.

Can I finance riding gear with the motorcycle?

Many dealers let you roll gear, accessories and an extended warranty into the loan, but you will pay interest on them for the life of the loan.
